Life Sciences Seminar - Program for Spring 2023

About the lecture

Anne Laudisoit is a wildlife biologist and eco-epidemiologist. She has extensive experience in the DR Congo, performing mammal inventories and eco-epidemiological research over a span of 15 years. After completing a Ph.D. in biology, Laudisoit spent two sabbatical years on a backpacking tour of Europe, Africa, and Chile. In 2010, she was invited to join an expedition in Madagascar’s Makay mountain as well as the Boyekoli Ebale Congo expedition organized by a consortium of academic institutions and museums. She spent seven weeks on boats and land along the Congo River exploring the forest and documenting the mammalian diversity. Based in the DR Congo, in 2015, Laudisoit returned to the Blue Mountains site where she had once trapped rats and accidentally discovered a new community of chimpanzees along the Lake Albert escarpment—and her life changed. She started using camera traps and climbing trees to document the biodiversity of the small forest and observe the chimpanzees. She and a colleague filmed the documentary Mbudha: In the Chimpanzees’ Footsteps, which acts as an educational tool illustrating the role of primates and local communities in conservation. With the support of National Geographic, she continues to document the chimpanzees and biodiversity of the Djugu territory.
