Life Sciences Seminar in Spring 2021 will be online

Dear Students and Colleagues,

we would like to inform you that Life Sciences Seminar will finally continue its series in Spring 2021. Due to the current anti-epidemic measures, we decided to switch the seminar to online form - lectures via MS Teams.

So do not hesitate to add Life Sciences Seminar among your courses!

We sincerely prefer live talks but we believe that also this form of lectures of renowned scientists from various life sciences fields will bring you inspiration, new perspectives, and opportunities.

In the spring series of the Life Sciences seminar, we have focused on internationally successful Czech scientists (either having their research groups in the Czech Republic or abroad) but also foreign scientists mainly as a part of Mendel lectures will give their talks.

Below, you can find detailed information about registration for the course and also more information about a few of the speakers in the upcoming semester.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Lucie Nesvadbova at lus@sci.muni.cz.

Who will give a talk?

Dr. Kateřina Sam from University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice

Dr. Kateřina Sam will give her talk Fifty Shades of Green Alias where Do the Predators Keep the Plants Flourish? on March 11, 2021.

You can read an exciting interview with her below.

Na stromy v Pošumaví a v eukalyptovém lese v Austrálii lepila housenky z dětské plastelíny. V Japonsku chodila do lesa v kalhotách s rolničkami, aby zaplašila medvědy.

___

Sticking Plasticine caterpillars on trees in the foothills of the Šumava Mountains and in Australian eucalypt forests. Trekking through Japanese woodlands wearing jingle bells on her trousers to scare off bears. Hand-picking ants off tree trunks in the tropical rainforests of Papua New Guinea. And several times being ambushed – one such encounter left her running for help through a rainforest for two days, hands tied and alone. Also having to dress the wounds of a man hacked with a machete. This is how biologist Kateřina Sam describes the wild side of doing fieldwork for a prestigious international research project.

Prof. Martin Wikelski from Max Planck Institute for Ornithology, Germany

Martin Wikelski will give his talk The Internet of Animals on May 20, 2021 as a part of Mendel Lectures.

He is a director at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology based in Radolfzell, Germany, and professor of ornithology at the University of Konstanz. He is currently investigating global migratory patterns in animals with particular emphasis on conservation, detection of disasters, disease spread, and global change.
